They both tug at her heart in different ways, and there are no easy answers. But a year as an exchange student in Germany begins to teach her how deceptively easy it is to numb her feelings. As life becomes more challenging, the temptation to escape grows stronger. Does friendship run deeper than pain?
This book was a little challenging for me to rate because it’s hard to categorize. It’s too deep to be chick lit, and there’s not a happily ever after, which makes it a tough fit for the romance category. I suppose you can only classify it as women’s fiction, which seems too generic somehow. If there was a category for “wife/mother retraces her life journey to figure out where she went wrong and ended up as an addict,” this book would fit squarely in that category. But there’s not a category like that (at least not one that I can find on Amazon), so here we are, with a book that I find hard to classify.
Since I can’t classify the book, I’ll just talk about the positives and negatives as I see them. First, the positives:
But Amanda’s love and devotion seemed to turn on and off as easily as flipping a light switch. When she was with Braden, she loved Braden and wanted to be with him forever. When she was with Tanner, she loved Tanner and wanted to be with him forever. I got whiplash reading about it. Frankly, I failed to see why both guys didn’t dump her and move on with someone a little more mature.
And it’s not really a negative, but there was a semi-cliffhanger-ish ending. I hate cliffhangers. When I got to the end of the book, damn it, I wanted to know who adult Amanda was married to. Was it Braden? Tanner? Someone else? I’d have to read the next book to find out, which irks me. But, I can’t blame the author too much. It worked, after all. I’ll probably read the next book. I hate unfinished stories.
All in all, for readers who enjoy a unique story that defies classification, I highly recommend this one.
Full disclosure: We were generously offered a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review, but we didn’t take it. We downloaded via Kindle Unlimited.
