When a commenter on Nessa’s blog starts harassing her online, Nessa shrugs it off. Trolls are a part of internet life. But eventually the troll begins threatening her safety and releasing personal details... details only her husband would know.
As Nessa’s life is dismantled piece by piece, her only option is to find John and put a stop to the lies. But when their son becomes a pawn in his twisted game, she must face a disturbing truth: Maybe John isn’t tormenting her, after all. But if he’s not... who is? And how far will this monster go to exact revenge?
Earlier this summer, I read LS Hawker’s debut novel, The Drowning Game and really liked it. The characters were quirky but also had real emotional depth and were easy to like. Although the characters in Body and Bone are genuine and authentic, they’re not so easy to like. As a reader, you want to root for them but they don’t always make it easy. I suspect the author would correctly point out that most people are a complicated mixture of admirable qualities, shameful vices and everything in between. While that may be true, not many possess the extremes that make up Nessa Donati, the main protagonist.
What I liked
What I didn’t like
Looking at these two lists, the things I liked clearly outweigh the things I didn’t. That feels about right since I definitely liked the story overall. That said, I was hoping for an ending that didn’t leave me thinking “Really? That’s it? That’s the explanation for the mystery throughout the entire book?” Don’t get me wrong, it’s a surprising reveal but in some ways it just didn’t ring true for me. I can’t really explain more without giving away spoilers and it’s entirely possible other readers may not feel that way at all. Personally, I just felt like it was a teeny, tiny bit of a let down given how the characters were presented throughout the book.
All that said, you should give this book a try. In the end, it’s a well crafted story with interesting characters and real, palpable terror. It’s worth the read.
