After reading this book, I’m...confused. I’m not entirely sure what I think of it. That never happens to me. If you’ve read any of my reviews (the romance stuff on the site) you know that I’m pretty darned opinionated and don’t usually have any problem voicing those opinions. But this time...I’m stuck.
The premise is fantastic. I loved that the animals were the main characters and the protagonists, and that only the humans in the story were a little sketchy. That all really worked for me.
Was the writing style itself super engaging? Not really. But it wasn’t bad, either. I mean, I kept reading and wanting to know how everything would end, so it couldn’t have been bad, right? (See what I mean about how confused I am?)
If I was forced to pick out a concrete thing that impacted my rating of this book, I’d have to say it was how the story was organized. The three different parts of the story each had a fairly different premise. I think each of those sections could have been expanded on and made into its own book. This easily could’ve been a 3-book series. If it had been divided into more books and expanded on a bit, I would’ve gotten to know the characters better and had more in-depth descriptions of what was going and why. As it stands, I guess I got a little bit of plot whiplash from section to section.
As for a minor gripe that didn’t impact my rating but irked me a bit, I’d have to point out that on the cover, the dog depicted is a Bull Terrier. The dog described in the book is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Two completely different dogs.
All in all...I’m still confused. Do me a favor, y’all. Read this one and let me know what you think. I need some help.
