Shapeshifter Blake Fournier has been wandering around the wilderness for months, often coming back to stay at his family’s ranch for just a couple of days before heading out again. His inner mountain lion is bored and listless, tired of the routine of hunts, fights, and one-night stands. His first impression of the woman stuck on the side of the road? She’s absolutely gorgeous. Second impression? Completely paranoid. But once he gets to know her, his lion only wants to wander into one last place: her heart.
This was a nice, flowing, quick read. I finished it in less than an hour (I’m a really fast reader, but that’s a compliment. It was easy reading, which I really enjoy).
I liked Hera. She put herself in harm’s way to do the right thing, but never once did she do anything so stupid that I wanted to throw The Precious (my Kindle) across the room. Regular readers of the genre know that acts of random stupidity are common among PNR heroines, but Hera didn’t have any of those moments. Kudos to you, Hera (and to the author).
Blake was also a supremely likeable dude. I can do without the whole “I like to dominate my women” aspect of his personality, but that wasn’t made into a huge plot point, so I can deal with it. I also didn’t like how he assumed he was in a safe enough place to let Hera go off and “clean up” by herself (uh, hel-lo, bad guys are still after you), but again, that was a minor nitpick that didn’t really annoy me to much.
The amount of character development was typical for a novella. (Hey, if you want tons of character development and world-building, don’t read novellas, folks.) Those of you who hate insta-love might want to avoid this one, though. I personally don’t mind it, especially when you’re dealing with shifters. (I’m willing to accept the whole “fated mates” trope in the PNR genre)
All in all, this was a strong debut novel, and I’m willing to bet that this author just gets better and better with each new release.
