Immortal assassins. That was pretty much all it took to convince me to read this book. I didn’t care if the blurb was good (it was), or if the author seemed nice (she did), I was all in based on those two words: immortal assassins. It could’ve been an epically bad move, as I’ve made hasty decisions before that didn’t end well for me. (Got a terrible spiral perm once that haunted me for a whole year in the late 80s) Fortunately, that wasn’t the case this time.
This is a hard book to categorize. Is it fantasy? Historical? Contemporary? Romance? The answer is yes. It’s all of those things. Writing a genre-bender like this couldn’t have been easy, and for that, I must give the author mad props.
I also commend the author’s style. The pacing throughout the story was nice and even, and there was just enough backstory to keep me informed as a reader, but not bogged down by miles and miles of minutia that I couldn’t give a crap about (I’m looking at you, Lord of the Rings).
I also really loved Rogue/Matthew as a hero. Who wouldn’t love an immortal assassin with a heart of gold who would go to any lengths to protect the woman he loves?
Sex was of the classy fade-to-black-before-penetration variety, which irritates some people, but I actually find it refreshing. Too many authors these days are getting pretty graphic, which isn’t something that appeals to everyone. There’s plenty of room in the romance market for “clean” books, in my opinion. (Although, I’ll totally keep reading the dirty ones, too…)
The book was also professionally edited, which is a HUGE plus in my mind. The cover art was a little plain for my liking, but it does match the tone of the book, so I’ll let my personal preference go on that one. (Other reviewers seemed to like it, too, so once again, I imagine I’m part of the unpopular opinion club. S’all good. I’m used to it.)
But sadly, my reading experience wasn’t all puppies and kittens and unicorns pooping glitter bombs. I do have a couple of criticisms:
All that being said, I would recommend this one to anyone looking for a unique, genre-bending romance that can satisfy readers who like their romances sweet and clean.
Full disclosure: a free copy of the book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
