In the course of their elopement from hell, Harper and Riddick find themselves entangled with the paranormal mafia, dodging creepy vampire ménage action, and participating in the supernatural equivalent of Fight Club. First rule of paranormal Fight Club? There are no rules. And, oh yeah, don’t die.
Seriously, what’s a girl gotta do to get her happily ever after?
Semi-Human can be read as a standalone, but works best if read as part of the Harper Hall Investigations series (Book 1: Semi-Charmed). This book is intended for mature audiences. This book is not intended for anyone who doesn’t enjoy smart, snarky heroines and dark, brooding heroes, and who doesn’t appreciate a plethora of nerdy pop culture references. For the rest of you: happy reading!
If you’re looking for award-winning literature, poetic prose and a never-before-seen plot, this book and it’s predecessor, Semi-Charmed most likely aren’t for you. Heck, the author even hints at that in her blurb. But if you’re looking for pure escapist fun that doesn’t take itself too seriously with a cool heroine and a hot hero, then don’t bother finishing this review. Harper Hall is the best kind of heroine for me. She’s funny, snarky, can handle herself in a fight and never shies away from telling anyone what she’s thinking. (In fact, I’m pretty sure she has no filter between what she’s thinking and what she says, which I kinda love)
The hero, Noah Riddick, is admittedly infuriating at times with his self doubt, but his adoration of and loyalty to Harper won me over. He’s the tall, dark and silent type without being an alpha-hole (that’s an alpha-male asshole, in case you were wondering), which is kind of hard to find in the PNR world.
Long-story-short, this series is worth a read. Just don’t read it in public because there are parts that are snort-laugh inducing (and no one looks hot while snort-laughing).
