I don’t usually read crime thrillers. I’m a romance reviewer. But I liked the blurb (it’s short and left me wanting answers, which I figure makes it an EXCEPTIONAL blurb) and thought the cover was pretty (what can I say? I’m shallow), so I decided to give it a read. In this case, stepping outside of my comfort zone paid off in a big way. (Unlike when I stepped outside my comfort zone and read some shifter erotica)
This is a nice, short, briskly paced read that has everything I would imagine the typical crime/thriller audience is looking for: criminals, corruption and murder. The hero is a real “man’s man” with an intriguing history. I liked reading about a 60-year-old who has already lived a very full life, and has much more ahead of him. (In the romance world, we read about a lot of hard bodied young men with lots of muscles and bare skin and...what was I saying? *Clears throat* But I digress…)
I also enjoyed how the author conveyed just the right amount of backstory. Not so much detail that I was bored, but plenty to get the story across. It seemed that every word was carefully chosen, and I really appreciated that. It’s a talent not every author has. (I’m looking at you, Tolkien).
Long-story-short, I highly recommend this one to fans of the crime/thriller genre and anyone else who appreciates a well-written murder mystery with a satisfying amounts of twists and turns along the way.
Full disclosure: I was offered a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, but didn’t take it. I downloaded via Kindle Unlimited instead.
