This is not my usual type of book. I’m the romance reviewer here at Knockin’ Books—and there’s certainly not much in the way of romance in this one to speak of. (Unless you count the love the hero obviously still has for his ex-wife) But I’m really glad I kept an open mind and decided to give this mystery/thriller/sci fi book a try, because it was a nice, flowing, easy read—and y’all know how much I love that particular combination of book traits.
The world-building in this story was just enough to keep me up to speed, but not so much that I was bogged down in minutia. (I’m looking at you, Tolkien) I enjoyed the casual mentions of phone implants, flying cars and portals, but was glad not to hear anything about how or when any of these things came to be (don’t really care).
I also loved that the Big Bad was a woman, who just so happened to be more powerful than the hero. You don’t see that too much in novels (or anywhere else, really). I do love me some girl power. And the action scenes were well-written and sufficiently...action-y.
There were a couple of things that bothered me, though. Here’s what kept it from being a 5-star read for me:
But, all in all, this was a highly enjoyable read that was a perfect diversion from my usual and-they-lived-happily-ever-after type of book. I’d highly recommend it to fans of, well, any genre, really.
Full disclosure: the author generously offered a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review, but I didn’t take it. I downloaded via Kindle Unlimited.
